Did you know that repairing even minor household water leaks can help you save approximately 10 percent on your water bill? Of course, to fix a leak, you first need to detect it. The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends taking the following steps to determine whether or not there’s a leak in your home’s plumbing:
As winter approaches, keep a close eye on your water usage. A family of four shouldn’t use more than 12,000 gallons per month. If your usage exceeds that, you very likely have a leak.
Don’t use any water for two hours. Read your water meter before and after. If its number is not exactly the same, then there’s probably a leak somewhere in your plumbing.
Drop food coloring into your toilet tank. Give it about 15 minutes, and be sure not to flush. If the dye makes its way into the bowl, then there’s a leak in your toilet. (Tip: Flush after the experiment is done to prevent stains!)
