Don’t Fall for These Furnace & Air Conditioning Myths
Furnace & Air Conditioning Myths

With rising energy costs, you might be trying anything to save some money on your monthly bills. But there are a lot of myths out there about your furnace & air conditioning (HVAC) that can cost you more money – but Service Plus Heating Cooling & Plumbing is here to help.

Check out these five HVAC myths and how to bust them.

Myth 1: Close air vents to save money

Closing air vents in unused rooms might seem like a good idea, but it could cost you more money and put more strain on your HVAC system. When you close air vents, it traps air in the ducts, which increases pressure in your vents and can cause your system to overheat. Keeping vents open is the more efficient choice.

Myth 2: Change your air filters only once a year

Air filters should be changed more than once a year to avoid damage to your system and keep it running efficiently. Most filters should be changed once a month, or at least every three months, but check your system manual to see how often you should change your filters.

Myth 3: Crank up the thermostat to quickly heat or cool your home

Coming home after a vacation or after a day at work, if your home is too warm or too cold, turning the thermostat up too high or down too low will not change the temperature any faster than expected, but it will increase your energy bills. When you do need to change the temperature, do it in increments of one or two degrees at a time. Changing the temperature all at once is one of the most common HVAC mistakes, but all it does is waste money and energy.  Service Plus does offer smart, programmable thermostats, that can automatically control these changes in temperatures.

Myth 4: Seal air leaks with duct tape

Contrary to what the name suggests, duct tape should not be used to fix air leaks. Duct tape does not withstand high heat, which could melt and cause more issues. If you notice a leak in your system, contact Service Plus technicians to fix your ductwork.

Myth 5: Schedule service only when your system breaks down

Regular maintenance can help prolong the life of your system and prevent unexpected breakdowns. Don’t wait until your system breaks down to schedule maintenance – your system should have routine maintenance twice a year. When it’s time for routine maintenance, contact Service Plus to schedule your next tune-up. And sign up for our Service Plus Club Membership and get regular annual maintenance for $8.25 per month.
