Are New Air Conditioners More Efficient?

While in the market for a new cooling system for your Indianapolis home, one of the biggest things you’re told to look for is higher efficiency, or energy-efficiency. But what exactly makes a new system more efficient? Are they even more efficient? Today the experts at Service Plus Heating, Cooling & Plumbing are here to discuss just that!

What Is Efficiency?

First off, let’s really define what we’re talking about here. When we’re talking efficiency for an HVAC system, the word could pretty much be synonymous with “effective.” A more efficient system is simply better at doing its job, and the benefits of this can be looked at in two big ways:

A more efficient cooling system is more energy-efficient, meaning it can get the same job done as a less efficient system while using far less energy (electricity) to accomplish it. That means a more efficient system will give you at least as much cooling power as an older system, but cost you a lot less cash. However, a higher efficiency system isn’t just going to cost you less electricity.

They are also more process-efficient, meaning they are also simply better at cooling your home. Why? Mostly due to tech advancements. Modern manufacturers have come up with stronger, more effective cooling systems, and this translates to a much more comfortable home overall in addition to that lower cost.

But Are They Actually More Efficient?

They sure are! As an example, we can use the SEER (Seasonal Energy-Efficiency Ratio) of older and newer systems for comparison.

Wait! What is a SEER rating?

The SEER of an HVAC system refers to the cooling output of the system (expressed in BTUs, British Thermal Units) divided by the electricity consumed to produce the cooling power. The resulting number of this equation is the SEER, and the higher the SEER, the higher the efficiency of the system.

The SEER rating routinely increases as years go on, meaning manufacturers have to produce systems equivalent or higher than the current SEER requirement. Ten years ago, cooling systems were awesome if they could break 10 SEER. Nowadays? 13 and 14 are the standard, and systems as high as 25 or more are available.

So are new systems more efficient? You bet, and by leagues! HVAC tech develops at an astounding rate, meaning each and every year new air conditioner installations are getting stronger, better, and more effective and efficient.
