While we certainly don’t mind if you pick up the phone and give us a call, there are some plumbing projects that even the novice do-it-yourself-er can handle. Here are a few common plumbing repairs and replacements to take on the next time you’re itching for an easy DIY project:
1. Change a shower head
To upgrade your shower head, all you really need is a pair of channel locks. Loosen your current shower head’s nut, and twist counter-clockwise until it comes off. If you notice a leak, apply some plumber’s tape on the threads before screwing in your new shower head.
2. Fix a leaky bathtub faucet
This fix will only take 15-20 minutes. Again, you’ll need channel locks and plumber’s tape for this project as well as a multi screwdriver and a seat wrench. Turn off the water, remove all knobs and valves, and replace the cartridges and seats. These new parts should be more water-tight, but wrap with plumber’s tape as an added precaution. Screw in the remaining pieces, and tighten with channel locks. Watch this video for step-by-step instructions.
3. Repair a running toilet
A running toilet is not only annoying, but it also wastes a whole lot of water. All you need for this repair is a pair of wire cutters, a flat head screwdriver and a Philips head screwdriver. Open the toilet tank and look at the flapper. This piece can become worn out due to a number reasons. If your toilet’s flapper has seen better days, head to your local home improvement store and pick up a universal replacement flapper.
